Community Center

I attended St. Stephen from kindergarten through 8th grade four decades ago, and I had classmates from all over the eastern part of Grand Rapids as well as EGR. (I’m still an EGR resident.) The neighborhood handled school and church traffic for nearly 100 years, so historical use would suggest the property and surrounding area could handle similar activity. It definitely needs updating and a rock solid plan, given the age of the structures and the density of nearby housing, but those challenges also bring opportunity to retain some kind of community social center on that site, preferably with a learning/engagement focus. I remember the great vibrancy of fairs, music performances, children’s games, life celebrations (my own and my parents’ weddings, for example), and clubs/groups for the community. If the diocese truly is planning on divesting of that property (Are they? Or is this speculation?), then I could see huge potential for a learning nature center on that site, perhaps paired with a limited school/college partnership, with classrooms, community event space, retain the church for performances/lectures/meetings/celebrations, plant some community gardens, replace the old convent with a greenhouse, etc.
